This year has brought a lot of change with it for everyone, but it’s reassuring to know that there are still some constants in our lives that can’t be derailed – not even by a year like this one! Fortunately, one of those constants is the annual return of the Scholarships for Military Children program, which began accepting applications this week for the 2021-2022 academic year.
Now launching its 21st year, the program focuses on awarding educational grants to the children of U.S. service members and celebrating the role that commissaries play in enhancing the quality of life of military customers. The value of education and other quality-of-life issues has come into focus during the last several months, so this is especially relevant to the military community right now.
“Our commissaries are honored to be a part of a program that provides the children of military service members with such a valuable financial boost to their higher education dreams.Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Michael R. Saucedo
We at the Defense Commissary Agency extend our thanks to the Fisher House Foundation, as well as our industry partner donors and others that make these scholarships possible.”
Senior Enlisted Advisor to The DeCA Director
The Fisher House Foundation, a nonprofit organization, administers the program with funding from commissary business partners and other earmarked donations it receives. It matches all program donations, dollar for dollar, and doesn’t charge for its services. which means every dollar it receives in contributions is used to fund scholarship grants.
The program expects to award 500 scholarship grants of $2,000 each, with at least one grant awarded for each commissary that receives qualified applicants. The remaining grants will be awarded on a prorated basis, so additional recipients will be selected from commissaries that have more qualified applicants.
Celebrating Student Success
We love offering scholarship ceremonies at local commissaries to celebrate and recognize the students selected for this honor. We don’t know yet whether we’ll be able to hold them this year, given the current environment, but we will certainly keep you posted, and we are very proud of these students’ accomplishments regardless!
“While a ceremony to congratulate and present each recipient with a certificate was not held at commissaries for scholarship year 2019-2020 due to COVID-19, that did not in any way diminish the accomplishment of each recipient selected to receive this honor.”Marye Dobson
