April is the Month of the Military Child, a special month set aside each year to honor children of servicemembers and the sacrifices they make in the course of military life.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense Education Activity, this commemoration, which was established by former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger in 1986, is sponsored by the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Military Community and Family Policy.
Once again, Your Commissary is celebrating military kids all month long! We invite your military kids to participate in the following activities:
Purple Up! for Military Kids at Your Commissary (April 15)
Wearing purple on Purple Up! Day is a way you can display your support for military kids in your community! Your Commissary is celebrating Purple Up! Day on Monday, April 15 this year, so we invite you and your kids to wear purple to the commissary on this day!
We’d love to share your gratitude and support for military kids online, too, so if you take pictures of your participation, we encourage you to share them in the comments below or on our social media channels.
Your Commissary’s Month of the Military Child Coloring Contest (April 1 – 30)
We’re inviting military kids 11 years of age or younger to color this year’s coloring page, which you can download above. Contestants must submit their work of art and completed entry form to their local commissary’s customer service office no later than Tuesday, April 30, 2019 to be eligible to win.
Please refer to the entry form for more rules and information.
- One Grand Prize winner will be selected from all entries to have his or her artwork featured on the front of a reusable bag that will be offered for sale in commissaries.
- One First Place winner and three Honorable Mentions will be selected for each age group (up to 6 years old and 7 to 11 years old).
- The two First Place winners will have their artwork featured on the back of the bag. The six Honorable mentions will have their artwork shown on the bag’s gussets (the sides of the bag).
