Are You Ready?

We’ve seen plenty of images of natural disasters in the media lately, and you may have even experienced some firsthand yourselves, including Hurricane Michael this week! Commissary operating schedules have been modified in recent weeks due to severe weather, impacting our stores in areas such as Florida, Hawaii, North Carolina and even South Korea… and the hurricane season isn’t over yet! But now is not the time to panic; it’s the time to make sure that you are prepared in case disaster strikes! And it all starts with one simple question you need to ask yourself: Are you ready?

Stock Your Survival Kit – Start at Your Commissary

Disaster preparedness costs can add up if you don’t shop wisely! Luckily, Your Commissary is making it easier for the military community to prepare by offering reduced prices as part of its severe weather promotional package through October 31! During this time, a variety of products that you can use to help stock your survival kit will be on promotion. Although the specific products offered for this promotion may vary by store, you can expect to see the following types of products offered:

  • Airtight bags
  • All-weather, heavy-duty shipping & duct tape
  • Batteries
  • Beef jerky & other assorted meat snacks
  • Canned goods
  • Cereal
  • First aid kits
  • Hand sanitizer & antibacterial wipes
  • Lighters, matches, lanterns & candles
  • Powdered milk
  • Soup & chili mixes
  • Weather-ready flashlights

If you haven’t set up a survival kit yet, it’s not too late! The Atlantic and Eastern Pacific hurricane seasons will be in effect until November 30, with peak activity for the Atlantic lasting through late October. A crisis can happen at any time, so it’s important to plan for an emergency before it happens, according to Tracie Russ, Director of Sales for the Defense Commissary Agency.

“We want to reinforce to the military community that their commissaries and exchanges are benefits that save them money as they prepare their survival kits.” -Tracie Russ

Even if your region isn’t likely to be impacted by a hurricane, it may have a greater risk of other types of disasters. That’s why it’s so important to learn what the greatest threats are for your region and prepare for a wide range of possible hazards, including:

Active Shooter Earthquakes Floods
Hurricanes Tornadoes Wildfires
Winter Weather
