Be Prepared Before Disaster Strikes!

Natural disasters have certainly dominated the headlines lately! Hurricanes have charted paths of destruction through communities in the United States and a devastating earthquake recently hit Mexico. But preparedness can save lives, so make sure to protect yourself and your loved ones by being prepared before disaster strikes!

Your Commissary makes stocking your survival kit a little easier

Planning ahead for possible disasters and remaining prepared is not only a big responsibility, but the costs can also add up if you don’t shop wisely. Luckily, Your Commissary makes it easier for the military community to prepare by offering reduced prices from April through October on a variety of products you can use to help stock your survival kit!

Although the specific products offered for this may vary by store, you can expect to see the following types of products offered:

  • Airtight bags
  • All-weather, heavy-duty shipping & duct tape
  • Batteries
  • Beef jerky & other assorted meat snacks
  • Canned goods
  • Cereal
  • First aid kits
  • Hand sanitizer & antibacterial wipes
  • Lighters, matches, lanterns & candles
  • Powdered milk
  • Soup & chili mixes
  • Weather-ready flashlights

If you haven’t set up a survival kit yet, it’s not too late! The Atlantic and Eastern Pacific hurricane seasons will be in effect until November 30, with peak activity for the Atlantic lasting through late October.

Hurricane Seasons

Although multiple tropical systems have already hit the United States during the 2017 hurricane season, we’re unfortunately not out of the danger zone yet!

  • Atlantic: June 1 – November 30
  • Eastern Pacific: May 15 – November 30

Even if your region isn’t likely to be impacted by a hurricane, it may have a greater risk of other types of disasters. That’s why it’s so important to learn what the greatest threats are for your region and prepare for a wide range of possible hazards, including:
